A unique fire containment bag used to deal with fires in portable electronic equipment on board aircraft.
There are hundreds of potential fire risks among the portable electronic devices (PEDs) that people take on board aircraft.
An aircraft carrying one hundred passengers could have up to five hundred lithium batteries (laptops, cameras, tablets, cell phones etc.) and these all pose a potential fire danger. All are powered by lithium-ion batteries and there is always a possibility they can overheat, causing the device to catch fire. This is known as thermal runaway, a rapid, uncontrolled chemical reaction within the battery that causes the internal temperature to rise and when one cell in a battery overheats it can produce enough heat (up to 900 oC) to cause adjacent cells to overheat. This can cause a lithium battery fire to flare repeatedly.
Lithium fire containment bag benefits:
Able to contain an electronic device in a bag that is so tough it can withstand the force of the device going into full thermal runaway.
Reduces the chance of catastrophic damage to the aircraft.
Mitigates the risk of toxic smoke in the cabin, which would be highly dangerous to both passengers and air crew.
Means that the flight probably won't need to be diverted. These estimated average cost of an aircraft diversion in the USA is $400,000.
